Engaging Science

 Coastal Creatures

Explore the diversity of the animals and plants that thrive in British Columbia’s 25, 725 kilometre coastline. Learn about the unique underwater ecosystem of the West Coast. This workshop engages teachers in a wide range of exciting hands-on activities, methods and resources designed to jump start K-7 science programs.

These flexible activities do not require expensive scientific equipment or expertise and can be adapted to different grade levels. Each activity is designed to support or be incorporated into a unit of study.

Focusing on some of the smallest and largest creatures in the oceans you will learn how the form and function of these animals are closely connected. Participants will design and race plankton models to discover why the form and function of this animal is truly important. Learn about the sounds of killer whales and how killer whales communicate. Discover why the shape of the mouth is critical to survival if you are a fish searching for food.

This Engaging Science teacher workshop lasts approximately 90 minutes and teachers will leave with interesting ideas and hands-on activities to implement into the classroom. Each participant will receive a free copy of the Coastal Creatures Playbook that is full of activities demonstrated in the workshop, along with additional activities, blackline masters and comprehensive explanations.
